As a Person Thinks...
Have you ever thought about what you're thinking about? Your thoughts could be keeping you from feeling motivated. It's written in the book of Proverbs, "As he thinks in his heart, so is he..." In other words, if you think you will never succeed, you will probably live up to your expectation. If you think you are just somebody who always fails, you need to change your thinking. There is more negative talk going on in our heads than we realize. If you can learn to recognize it, you can start to change it.
If you're thinking, "I never do anything right," make the change: "I've messed up before, but this will be different."
If you're thinking, "This is too difficult and I'm tired," make the change: "I'm going to accomplish this and feel all the better for it afterward."
If you're thinking, "What's the use? Why should I bother?" Make the change: "If I keep going, things are going to open up for me at some point."
Start seeing yourself as successful. If that's difficult for you to imagine, take it in small steps. Visualize success in little things and work your way up. Start thinking about what you're thinking about! Refuse to let the negative thoughts in. They'll always come knocking, but you don't have to open the door. Replace them with thoughts that will help.
If you have an undesirable task to perform, find something about it that makes it desirable.
Your Attitude Determines Your Altitude!
Find something to be thankful about. That undesirable task looms before you as a dark cloud you don't want to go through! But your attitude can change it's color. Instead of seeing the negative work involved, consider the positive outcome. "This is why I get paid!" Or, "at least I have a job!"
Find a different angle. You may be considering only the drudge of the task, without seeing the opportunity. Keep the end in sight. If you excel, there will be a payoff. It may not come immediately, but if you make a habit of seeing it this way and building yourself up with the rewarding angle, it will happen.
I studied the Chinese language for years. It was difficult to stay motivated at times. Then one day a friend saw some Chinese characters I was reading. "Man, you can read that???" he said with awe. When I thought about it from his perspective, it seemed really cool. I had taken it for granted. But now I can always step back and see it from a larger perspective: "It's amazing that I can actually read these Chinese characters."
You may take for granted the abilities you have, or the work that you do. Others might envy you. "Me? Yeah right." Don't think negatively. Maybe not everyone, but there is always someone in a worse position than you.
Find something to get excited about, even if it seems mundane. Don't say, "I have to..." Find a reason to say, "I get to!"
Don't Do it Alone
Your work or task may be up to you alone, but that doesn't mean that friends can't encourage you. Get with like-minded people, coworkers or those in the same boat. Motivation comes from a community of support.
If you have no community of support, seek out friends or family members you can share with. Tell them about your work or what you are trying to do. Even if it is just to tell them, "I get to do this...tomorrow!" Sound off the good attitude and chances are they will respond with encouragement.
Learn Discipline
You will discover self motivation by learning how to discipline yourself. It doesn't require a great change, only small baby steps! Start with a simple plan to do just one thing. It may not even be the whole task, but just one part that you are forcing yourself to do.
If you learn how to do this, you can break up larger, more difficult tasks and turn them into smaller easier tasks. If you have set reachable and reasonable goals, you will feel good with each accomplishment, even before the whole task is done.
Time management will keep your motivation alive by keeping you free from the weighing down of a burdened schedule. As they say, you can't really manage time, but you can manage your behavior, and that will help you greatly. It's not as difficult as you may suppose. See my article.
Fail Forward

After all's been said and done, and things didn't work out the way you wished, learn from it. Learning from any mistakes will make you sharper and wiser for the next go. Failure is not the end. Don't throw in the towel, just clean up the mess. Don't get bitter, get better!
Discover self motivation for work by realizing that even your failures can be turned into future successes. That doesn't mean that failures are pleasant or that they'll always be easy. But it does mean that they can't stop you, and ultimately they may help you in the long run.
So many success stories are riddled with failures leading up to the success. Someone said, "Persistence is greater than genius." Persist in these simple ideas, and you will find motivation to get to your goal.
